Tring win Grasshoppers Pre-Season Rugby Cup

Grasshoppers held their annual pre-season Rugby and Netball Cup on Saturday 15th August.

14 teams took to the field to blow away the off-season cobwebs and compete for the Grasshoppers Pre-Season Tournament Cup and Bowl. The Grasshoppers pre-season tournament grows each year and has teams from across the country, including Tycroes RFC in Wales, Ashford RFC, High Wycombe RFC and Windsor RFC).

Tring were the eventual winners of the Cup competition, beating Bournville 18 - 7 in the final. Alistair Blacklaws, 1st XV Manager at runners up Bournville RFC said after the final: "Thank you to Grasshoppers for their kind hospitality and great organisation, as always. Tring were worthy winners but we still enjoyed the beers afterwards watching the International matches).

Reading Abbey won the Bowl competition, beating Grasshoppers 19 - 0. Alan Kilford, Director of Rugby at Reading Abbey commented: "We thoroughly enjoyed the pre-season tournament as coaches and players. Winning the Bowl was a bonus! Thanks to you all at Grasshoppers for your hard work on the day and the organisation."

Matt Gilmore, Director of Rugby at Grasshoppers said of the day: "The day went smoothly and the rugby was of a very good standard, especially with half the teams playing at Level 6. All the matches were in played in great spirit. We would like to extend a huge thank you to all of the clubs who attended and made the day very special. We trust everyone enjoyed the day and we look forward to welcoming all the teams back again for next season's pre-season tournament."

Stuart Mander from Tycroes RFC in Wales was very supportive of the Grasshoppers day. 'We want to thank Grasshoppers RFC for the welcome we were given over the weekend. The boys and families enjoyed the hospitality and the weekend immensely. Thanks for letting us fundraise for cancer research and I hope we can get a team together for next seasons tournament."

Grasshoppers would also like to thank the London Society referees: Crispin Davies, Alexis Charolais, Chris Northcut, Kevin Allum, David Stronge, Daniel Jones, Alan Davies and Tom Barber for a sterling job throughout the day.

On the Netball courts, Grasshoppers had a successful day with the A team winning the tournament, going through the day unbeaten. Grasshoppers B finished second with Phoenix taking the third place spot. However, Phoenix managed to beat the home sides in the Team Shoot Out competition.
