Grasshoppers welcomed top of the table, Hackney to
MacFarlane Lane hoping to reverse the 29-22 loss away back in October. Hackney
kicked off up the slope and G’s found it difficult to gain any momentum in the
game in the first half and but for some heroic defence the half time score of
0-26 could have been much worse with G’s leaking four tries and three
conversions.
So G’s kicked of the second half and threw everything at
Hackney and started to close the gap with a well taken unconverted try from
winger George Stanton after a well worked move down the blind side from within
G’s own twenty two. This was shortly followed by a try from number eight, James
Kent who controlled a front five drive and the conversion from stand-off, Conor
Gilmore saw the score narrow to 12-26.
G’s continued to throw the ball around and were rewarded
with a third try and George Stanton’s second and the Conor Gilmore conversion
saw the gap narrow to nine points as G’s pressed for what could have been two
bonus points should they have achieved the fourth try. However, this wasn’t to
be as the G’s revival was punctuated by a Hackney penalty to make the final
score 19-29.
