“Hoppers Away Win Well Deserved”

Seniors: First XV: 14th September 2019

Hammersmith and Fulham 29 32 Grasshoppers
It was back to league rugby on a glorious day in Southwest London when Grasshoppers kicked off their London Northwest 2 2019/20 season at Hammersmith & Fulham. Pre-season had gone well we some good new recruits with Jason Lee at stand-off and flankerDeji Olajide with fitness being a key factor to improve on 2018/19 season. So, after fifteen minutes it was something of a surprise to see the home side 12-0 ahead through a penalty try and an unconverted try.   This though spurred G’s on and their forwards started to secure some good possession and so were soon camped on the home side’s line so up popped prop Aaron Sheehan for an unconverted try shortly followed by a try from flanker, Jasper Rose which was converted by Jason Lee to level the scores on 12-12. Then to round off a magnificent second quarter of the game Deji Olajide bludgeoned his way to the line for an unconverted try to make the half time score 12-17.   Hammersmith & Fulham started the second half well mainly due to G’s continuing to give ground due to unnecessary penalties and so G’s found themselves behind 22-17 thanks to a converted try and a penalty.   G’s then once again saw themselves in control which brought the best move of the game as Jason Lee put centre, Sean Connor into space who in turn fed winger, Harry Hancock who slipped on for the try and with the Jason Lee conversion G’s were back in front 22-24 and looking to secure the win. However, G’s will reflect one how best to hold onto a win and that means playing safe and not conceding penalties and so the win could have evaporated with an intercepted try which was converted to draw the teams level at 29-29. A penalty could have seen G’s with two points only but it missed and G’s had the opportunity to snatch the lead back along with a win when they opted for a kick at goal so up stepped Jason Lee who slotted the kick and G’s took the win 29-32 and so, in the words of Director of Rugby, Juan Murray yes it was a well deserved win.   Next week G’s are at home to Welwyn 3pm kick off.
