Improving Hoppers Maintain Momentum

Seniors: First XV: 21st September 2019

Grasshoppers 31 17 Welwyn
Grasshopper welcomed Welwyn to Syon Lane for their first home game of the season and kicked off from the railway end, in glorious sunshine but the defensive clouds gathered as Welwyn went 0-7 ahead almost straight from the kick off. But G’s showed their resilience and drew level with a well taken try from second row, Jasper Rose which was converted by stand-off, Jason Lee. G’s continued to press and took the lead 14-7 with a try from scrum half and player of the day, Jack Jones with the Jason Lee conversion. G’s looked the better side but this wasn’t reflected in the half time score line as the visitors drew level with a second converted try to make it 14-14 at the break.  G’s took control of the game in the second half and re-took the lead with a fantastic solo try from number eight, Louis Brown and with the Jason Lee conversion took the lead to 21-14. The visitors came back at G’s but some stout defence they restricted them to a penalty to narrow the score to 21-14. G’s and Jack Jones though, showed their ability and so Jack slipped in for his second try and G’s bonus point try to make it 31-17. The visitors came back at G’s and but from some stout tackling could have made it closer but G’s held out for the win and Coach, Clive See was satisfied with the performance and especially the fitness levels. Next week G’s are away at Hemel Hempstead, 3pm kick off.
