Hoppers Take Foot off the Gas at Hemel

Seniors: First XV: 28th September 2019

Hemel Hempstead 29 24 Grasshoppers
Grasshoppers travelled to Hemel Hempstead hoping to retain their 100% record and kicked off up the slope and into a stiff breeze and got of to a great start territorially, but took 15 minutes to crack the home side’s defence when in mi-field second row, Jasper Rose spotted a gap at the ruck and made the break to set up winger, Blaze Salle to break the deadlock with an unconverted try. G’s continued to take advantage of the home side’s fragile defence which centre, Sean Connor took full advantage of when he elusively made his way to the half way line to score a try and when converted by stand-off, Jason Lee saw them 0-12 ahead with half time beckoning. The home side though had the last word in the half as G’s started to let first time tackles slip and gave away some silly penalties which saw the home side finish the half 5-12 through an unconverted try. G’s were confident though that if the second half went the same way as the first that three wins out of three was achievable especially with the slope and the wind. However, the home side hadn’t read that script and threw everything at G’s in the third quarter of the game when they took complete control and prevented G’s having any possession in that period. This pressure saw the win slip away from G’s with the home side adding four tries and two conversions to made it 29-12. G’s though had the better of the fourth quarter and came back with a try from hooker and skipper, Jack Walkden which went unconverted and with the last play of the day a penalty try with the home side on the back foot they made the final score 29-24 and picked up two bonus points. Next week G’s are at home to Luton 3pm kick off.
