Hoppers Defence Holds Firm

Seniors: First XV: 5th October 2019

Grasshoppers 18 5 Luton
Grasshoppers welcomed Bedfordshire side, Luton to Syon Lane and a quick scan of the record books showed that the two sides had never met before in any competition. So with no playing knowledge of each other both sides started the match with some trepidation as G’s kicked off from the school end. G’s started the game well and broke the deadlock with only three minutes gone with a break down the blind side as prop, Aeron Sheehan fed winger, Harry Hancock for an unconverted try. The visitors came back though territorially as their forwards tried to bludgeon their way through but couldn’t get the final pass away and so it was G’s who move further ahead as stand-off, Jason Lee converted a penalty to make the half-time score a very close 8-0. The game remained tight with end to end rugby which generally ended with an unforced error which kept the score line tight and so it was G’s number eight who broke the deadlock with a well taken interception on the halfway line to slip under the posts with the Jason Lee conversion taking the score to 15-0. The final phase of the game saw Luton continue to throw their heavy artillery at G’s which eventually paid off as they drove over at the lineout amid some G’s confusion around the interpretation of the law for an unconverted try to make the last ten minutes of the game nail-biting from a G’s prospective. G’s though broke out and were awarded a penalty which Jason Lee converted to make it 18-5 which put the result in no doubt but the visitors tried everything to get a losing bonus point but the G’s defence held firm and so hold their third place in the league with 16 points and play Fullerians away on 19th October 3pm kick off.
