Match Report: Grasshoppers v Datchworth

Seniors: First XV: 26th October 2019

Grasshoppers 25 10 Datchworth
Grasshoppers 25 Datchworth 10 "Three Home Wins for Hoppers” It was three great wins for Grasshoppers yesterday as their three teams beat Datchworth, Old Haberdashers (17-7) and Ealing Exiles (20-19) in league and merit table games. G’s kicked off the fist XV game from the School end and were in command from the start as they pressurised the visitors line and went ahead with a try from centre, Billy-Graham Park who also converted to make it 7-0. G’s continued the pressure and were soon ahead 12-0 with an unconverted try from full back, George Stanton. G’s pressed and pressed but could not budge the score board further and so just before half time a rare lapse in defence at the ruck allowed the visitors to narrow the half time score 12-7. As the conditions deteriorated the visitors possession and territory improved and so it was end to end stuff for the opening encounters of the second half and so it was G’s who opened up a five point gap with a penalty from stand-off, Jason Lee to push the score to 15-7. For the next fifteen minutes G’s has to defend as the visitors threw the proverbial kitchen sink at G’s but they help firm albeit they claimed a penalty to narrow the gap back to five points. G’s had the final word though as they played some glorious running rugby in less than glorious conditions with two unconverted tries the first started in G’s own half saw winger, Mark Cunningham run forty metres to outstrip the visitors defence for a third try in the corner that went unconverted. And the fourth bonus point came from a forward drive that was completed by hooker and skipper Jack Walkden to make the final score 25-10. So all three Teams and opposition retreated to the bar to I’m sure consider the earlier glory’s of the mighty England victory over New Zealand. A rest week next week but on 9thNovember are away to top of the Table London Welsh, 2.30 kick off.
