Comedy of errors at Grasshoppers

Seniors: First XV: 14th December 2019

Grasshoppers 30 34 Chiswick
In a game littered with handling and unforced errors from both teams, Chiswick kicked-off the match from the railway end, with a strong wind at their backs. Play was even until Gs conceded a penalty which was duly kicked by Chiswick to take the lead 0 - 3 after 6 minutes. From the restart Gs won the ball and were soon on the attack and with a scything run from Mark Cunningham saw him touch down in the corner – unconverted to lead 5 – 3. From the restart Chiswick were soon pressing Gs line. Gs conceded another penalty from which Chiswick took a quick tap and ran in for a try – converted after 12 minutes to retake the lead 5 – 10. Play continued to and fro, but after 20 minutes Chiswick ran in another try – converted to extend their lead to 5 – 17. Undeterred Gs came back with a try from Matt Harpur – unconverted after 25 minutes to bring the score to 10 – 17, with Gs gaining a bit of momentum Chiswick’s lead was further reduced to 15 – 17 with an unconverted try after 30 minutes from Jack Walkden, and this was to be the score at half-time. Chiswick were first on the scoreboard in the 2nd half with a converted try after 42 minutes for a 15 – 24 lead. Gs were soon back on the scoreboard themselves with a try from Blaise Salle – unconverted after 45 minutes to reduce Chiswick’s lead to 20 – 24. Spurred on Gs Matt Harpur scored his 2nd try – converted by Jason Lee to take the lead 27 – 24 after 50 minutes, but Chiswick fought back to retake the lead 27 – 29 with an unconverted try. Gs came back with a penalty kicked by Jason Lee to lead again 30 – 29. This led to the final tense minutes, but with Gs conceding a further penalty, Chiswick kicked to the corner, and from the resulting line-out Chiswick plunged over for a try – unconverted to take the win 30 – 34.
