Hoppers Halt Fullerians Streak

Seniors: First XV: 1st February 2020

Grasshoppers 36 24 Fullerians
Prior to the match both teams and supporters stood for a minute’s silence in memory of The Life of Frank Whittaker, a Grasshoppers Honorary Life Vice President, and the father of Club Stalwart Ian Whittaker. With Fullerians looking to extend their unbeaten January run, and Grasshoppers looking to add the 11 league points achieved in January, both teams had a positive outlook. Fullerians kicked off the match from the school end into a strong wind. Gs cleared the ball into Fuller’s half and kept play around their 22, Fullers briefly broke out, but Gs forwards worked their way up field, and a fine break by Louis Brown saw him touch down between the posts – converted by Jason Lee after 8 minutes for a 7-0 lead. From the restart Fullers made progress deep into Gs 22, pressing Gs line, and from a 5-metre scrum pushed Gs back to touchdown – converted after 15 minutes to level the score at 7-7. Gs were soon back in Fullers 22 after the restart resulting in a try for Callum McCormack – converted by Jason Lee after 17 minutes to retake the lead 14-7. Fullers took play into Gs half, but Gs forwards worked their way back into Fullers 22 and from a cross field kick by Jason Lee, Matt Harpur gathered the ball and touched down near the corner – unconverted after 25 minutes, to extend Gs lead to 19-7. From the restart Fullers took play into Gs 22, resulting in a try – unconverted after 30 minutes to narrow the gap to 19-12. From the restart Gs came straight back with a 2nd try for Callum McCormack – unconverted after 32 minutes taking the score to 24-12, and this was to be the score at half-time. Gs kicked off the 2nd half now playing into the strong wind, and gaining possession, the forwards kept it tight going through the phases making their way into Fullers 22, but Fullers managed to clear, again back came Gs forwards playing a tight and controlled game eventually for Jasper Rose to score a try after 50 minutes – unconverted to increase the lead to 29-12. From the restart Gs suffered a brief lapse in concentration and discipline that saw Fullers score a try – unconverted after 60 minutes, followed by the award of a penalty try after 65 minutes to narrow Gs lead to 29-24. From the restart Fullers were beginning to get the upper hand, but Gs regrouped and got their game heads back on and pressed Fullers back into their 22, resulting in a 2nd try for Jasper Rose – converted by Jason Lee to again stretch the lead to 36-24 after 75 minutes. Gs controlled the remainder of the game to see out the win. So, it was Gs that achieved their match objective taking 5 league points, moving above Fullerians into joint 5th place in the League.
