Fortis In Animo

Seniors: First XV: 22nd February 2020

Prior to the match both teams and supporters stood for a minute’s silence in honour of the memory of Fred Hallows who sadly passed away on 20th February. Fred was the last surviving member of Grasshoppers six founder members.  Gs kicked off the match from the School end into a strong blustery wind, Welsh worked their way into Gs half and were rewarded with a converted try after 3 minutes for a 0-7 lead. Gs won the ball from the restart and kept Welsh back on their 22, but Welsh won the ball back and broke out to take play up to Gs line, from a scrum Louis Brown picked up and fed Blaise Salle who took play back to halfway, Gs continued to press forward but Welsh again cleared to halfway, then with some strong running and passing maintaining pressure on Gs line eventually leading to a try – unconverted after 22 minutes to increase their lead to 0-12. From the restart Welsh worked their way into Gs 22, leading to a further try – converted after 35 minutes to move further ahead 0-19. Welsh cleared deep into Gs 22 from the restart keeping the pressure on Gs defence, Gs slowly worked their way-out taking play into Welsh’s half, where play continued up to half time. An exhibition by Grasshoppers and London Welsh Minis filled the half time interval entertaining the crowd, a fitting tribute to Fred’s vision and legacy. London Welsh kicked off the 2nd half, but Gs lost possession leading to a scrum to Welsh who pressed into Gs 22, Gs briefly cleared, but back came Welsh to run in a try – converted after 50 minutes to move further ahead 0-26. From the restart Welsh were soon back in Gs half and with Gs failing to clear effectively Welsh stole the ball from an ensuing lineout and were again pressing Gs line, but Gs held firm and cleared their line and were soon pressing Welsh’s line, again Welsh cleared up to half way where play remained until Welsh pressed forward leading to a further try – converted after 65 minutes to lead 0-33. Play continued to be even until the final whistle with Welsh seeing out the win 0-33.
