Seniors: First XV: 29th February 2020

Grasshoppers 33 30 Letchworth
Letchworth kicked off from the school end in bright sunshine, but with a strong cross wind blowing towards the club house. Play remained even but Letchworth broke away to run in a try – unconverted after 5 minutes. Played again remained even, but Letchworth began to get the upper hand and were camped in G’s 22, eventually running in a further try – unconverted after 15 minutes to stretch their lead to 0-10.  Gs pressed forward from the restart and this saw Louis Brown breakthrough for a try – converted by Jason Lee after 18 minutes to bring the score to 7-10.   Play then remained between the 22s, and from a penalty Gs kicked into Letchworth’s 22 Gs won the ensuing lineout and with some swift passing Mark Cunningham cut through for a try – converted by Jason Lee after 23 minutes to take the lead 14-10.  But Letchworth came straight back to run through for a try – converted after 25 minutes to retake the lead 14-17.  Play again remained even but the weather deteriorated with Storm Jorge bringing in rain and sleet, Letchworth again pressed forward to power over for a try – converted after 36 minutes, to increase their lead to 14-24.  Gs took play into Letchworth’s 22 and from a 5-metre lineout Jack Walkden was powered over for a try – unconverted after 40 minutes to close the half 19-24.  Gs started the 2nd half on the front foot, and were soon pressing Letchworth’s line, but were unable to break through and Letchworth were able to clear and take play up to G’s 22, play continued again between the 22s and the weather improved with the sun reappearing. From a series of penalties conceded by Letchworth Gs worked their way upfield, only for Letchworth to run Gs back to their own 22, again for Gs to break out with fine runs from Louis Brown and Blaise Salle, and with play in Letchworth’s 22 a cross field kick by Conor Gilmore was caught by Callum McCormack who ran in for a try – converted by Matt Harpur after 65 minutes for Gs to retake the lead 26-24.  Letchworth were straight back at Gs and were back on the scoreboard with a penalty to take the lead 26-27 after 70 minutes and added another penalty after 75 minutes to stretch their lead to 26-30.  With the game in its final minutes Gs pressed forward but Letchworth’s defence held firm until they conceded a penalty, Gs opted for a scrum and with a great effort from the forwards drove forward for Louis Brown to score his 2nd try – converted by Matt Harpur in the final play of the game to take the win 33-30.

Grasshoppers Rugby is always recruiting players of all standards to join our great club. We boast fabulous facilities consisting of 3 pitches (all floodlit). The main pitch is an AGP 3G surface which is used for training and league fixtures.

We boast an excellent on site purpose built gym for the use of all our players.

We have a great coaching team, with Clive See as Head Coach ably assisted by Munster man Asst Head & Defence Coach, Jerry Hedigan and Backs Coach Sean Connor, all with a wealth of coaching experience. We are also fortunate to have Mike Cudmore assisting as a Forwards specialist Coach.

In addition, and ongoing throughout the season, we have a specialist Rugby Strength & Conditioning Coach, Stuart Aimer, vastly experienced working at International 7s level.
