Hoppers Gain Bonus Points In Cliff-hanger At The Lane
Seniors: First XV: 31st January 2026
| Grasshoppers | 33 | 37 | Beaconsfield |
Grasshoppers welcomed second place, Beaconsfield hoping to reverse the 50-22 loss to them earlier in the season. So on a bright final day of January the visitors kicked off from the school end and tested G’s defense for the first 10 minutes of the game and eventually broke the deadlock with an unconverted try to make it 0-5.
However, the G’s forwards took control of open play with props, Aaron Sheehan and Lewis Perkins on the charge. This allowed G’s the luxury of a 5 metre lineout which led to a magnificent drive with second row, James Kent getting the touchdown and with the conversion from stand-off Conor Gilmore it was 7-5.
The visitors retook the lead with a converted try shortly followed but a fantastic try from Aaron Sheehan and with the conversion added by Conor Gilmore G’s retook the lead 14-12. G’s struck again shortly afterwards as hooker, Jack Walkenden slipped in for a try to make it 19-12 and yes Conor Gilmore and his kicking boots widened the gap 21-12.
However, the visitors showed their second-place form as they scored two tries and a conversion to make the half time score 21-24.
G’s started the better in the second half but failed to convert territory into points until a magnificent turnover at a ruck saw G’s attack ending with a bonus point try from winger, Tom Sherwin and with Conor Gilmore making a 100% tally G’s regained the lead 28-24.
However, the visitors-maintained pressure and moved into what seemed an unassailable lead with a penalty, and two unconverted tries 28-37. G’s though, rose to the challenge with some excellent play linking backs and forwards and were rewarded with a try in the corner from winger Cameron Isenburg which went unconverted to narrow the gap to 33-37. G’s threw everything at the visitors in the last five minutes and despite two 5 metre lineouts G’s failed to nick thew game and had to settle two, albeit very valuable, bonus points.
It’s a free week next week and then back into action over the weekend 13th /14th February.
