First Half Promise Hits the Buffers in Second Half

Seniors: First XV: 18th October 2025

Beaconsfield 50 22 Grasshoppers

Grasshoppers travelled to in form Beaconsfield for their sixth game of the season hoping to build on their win away at Oxford Harlequins the previous week and G’s kicked off down the slope and put the home side under pressure from the start with powerful drives from prop, Lewis Perkins which led, after 5 minutes with a try from centre and captain, Chris Brown with the conversion from stand-off, Charlie Lecuyer making the score 0-7 although, this was bitter sweet as Lewis Perking left the field and missed the rest of the game.

The next five minutes of the game saw both sides try to take control and after 10 minutes the home side showed their form with an unconverted try to make it 5-7. G’s though utilized the slope well and pushed the score to 5-10 with a penalty from Charlie Lecuyer.

Back came the home side and they went ahead 19-10 thanks to two converted tries but just before half time G’s struck back with a push-over try from a lineout with prop, Matt Coakley coming up with the ball and Charlie Lecuyer adding the conversion to male the half time score a nail-biting 19-17 with all to play for.

The term "a game of two halves” is sometimes overused but it summed this game up completely as the home side used the slope well and took the game to G’s. This wasn’t helped by the loss of flanker, Joe Whittaker who was replaced by Manix Taylor for his second 1st XV appearance. However, it was punch for punch in the first 10 minutes of the second half as the score moved onto 26-22 with a converted try for the home side and an unconverted try from winger, Louis Dunn.

The last section of the game saw the home side take control not helped by three G’s yellow cards and an inability to clear their own lines after some stoic defence. And whilst G’s pushed hard, led by Chris Brown, to secure a fourth try and a bonus point it wasn’t to be and so the home side ran away with it scoring 4 further tries and 2 conversions to make the final score 50-22.

Next week G’s are at home to Old Priorians 2pm kick off.
